The Discipline and Patience of Saving Money

The Discipline and Patience of Saving Money

I’ve got good news and bad news. With the media always sharing the bad news, I thought I would share the good news… and then give you the bad news. The good news is that everyone has within them a hidden reservoir of Discipline, Patience, and Faith in the Future. These 3 qualities can apply to many areas in your life including saving money.  Let’s focus for a moment on using these qualities for a new workout regimen.

So you identify an activity that you want to do. You begin to practice it day in and day out. Practice is the Discipline. When you are feeling sore and you’re feeling tired, discipline helps you push through.

“THE PAIN OF DISCIPLINE IS MEASURED IN OUNCES, WHEREAS THE PAIN OF REGRET IS MEASURED IN TONS.” -JIM ROHN

Patience allows you to keep going even though you may not be seeing immediate results. Nor is your progress in any endeavor going to be a predictable, straight line.  With exercise, you’re going to have plateaus and time where rest helps you progress.

Faith in the Future is your vision of where you want to take yourself. Whether it is losing a bunch of weight, or adding a bunch of muscle, or being able to do extreme feats of physical prowess, Faith in the Future is your Vision.  We all have these 3 qualities though they may come and go. The good news is that we all have them and we can nurture them in various areas of our life.

Another area I want to talk about today is saving money. Saving money requires the discipline of setting aside the money in a special place instead of spending it, it requires the patience to do this week in and week out, month in and month out, and it requires a vision of what that money is for. Without a vision and goals for what that money is for, the money has no purpose. The purpose doesn’t have to be centered around yourself, it could be for family just like you may want to be healthy enough to be around your family.

“MONEY IS A TERRIBLE MASTER, BUT CAN BE AN EXCELLENT SERVANT.” -P.T. BARNUM

The bad news with all of this is that – just as with life – there is no Easy Button. Any kind of regimen that you undertake for any part of your life requires hard work. There are no silver bullets, no magic pills to eat, no easy money or passive income or Get Rich Quick schemes! The hard work is the working out, the saving of the money, watching what we’re spending, and always having a goal to move us forward. The good news is that we’re all capable of doing the hard work.
